This Sunday is the 2021 International Day of Light, which is held on 16 May every year to mark the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman.

To celebrate the occasion, why not listen to the latest episode of the Physics World Weekly podcast, find out how far-ultraviolet light could help with the next pandemic, or see how solar cells are closing in on 50% efficiency.

We've also got a whole lot more light-based content on this Day of Light collection page.

Edinburgh Instruments application note: Raman microscopy of graphene

Confocal Raman microscopy can be used for determining the number of layers of graphene in a sample. This application note shows how Raman mapping can produce images that reveal areas of the sample which are high in disorder. The RM5 Raman Microscope's high spatial and spectral resolution allows for high-quality graphene analysis, the perfect tool for any materials scientist.
