I was delighted to hear the news this week that Catherine Heymans has been appointed Astronomer Royal for Scotland – the first woman to be given that role since it was set up in 1834.

Picked by an international panel organized by The Royal Society of Edinburgh, Heymans says she will use her new position to show girls that science is an "amazing, creative and innovative career, and absolutely for them".

You can find out more about Heymans' own research in the free-to-read Physics World Discovery ebook The Dark Universe, which she wrote in 2017.

Edinburgh Instruments application note: Raman microscopy of graphene

Confocal Raman microscopy can be used for determining the number of layers of graphene in a sample. This application note shows how Raman mapping can produce images that reveal areas of the sample which are high in disorder. The RM5 Raman Microscope's high spatial and spectral resolution allows for high-quality graphene analysis, the perfect tool for any materials scientist.
